Tesla CEO Elon Musk is considering taking the company private. The electric-car firm’s shares soared after Musk revealed his thoughts on Twitter, causing trade to be halted for an hour although Musk then cautioned that no final decision had been made. Tesla has been public since 2010, but recently experienced a series of setbacks and negative news reports.
China has retaliated against the recently announced additional tariffs from the U.S. by slapping a 25% levy on $16 billion worth in U.S. goods, including crude oil and cars. The U.S. on Tuesday said that it would impose 25% tariffs on an additional $16 billion worth of Chinese imports from August 23, following the $34 billion worth of tariffs announced in July.
Snap reported that Snapchat's user count declined by 1.5% to 188 million in the second quarter, as the social network faces stiff competition from rivals like Instagram. This marks the first time Snapchat has reported a decline in daily active users. Still, Snap's Q2 earnings beat expectations, reporting $262.3 million in revenue, compared to an estimated $249.8 million.

Missouri voters rejected a ban on the mandatory collection of union dues among private sector workers, in what’s being seen as a victory for labor unions. Republican lawmakers had passed the legislation but it was held off for more than a year after unions successfully petitioned for a referendum.
In a move akin to rent control, the U.S. will offer lower-cost loans to apartment owners who agree to cap rent increases. The program, announced Tuesday by Freddie Mac — the country’s biggest backer of the loans — is available immediately nationwide. Rents are capped for the life of the loan, and recipients must have at least 50% of the units affordable to households making the local median income or below.
