Los Angeles is to become the first city in the country to use portable scanners to screen the bodies of metro riders for weapons and explosives. The units mounted on wheels can detect such items from up to 30 feet away, scanning as many as 2,000 bodies an hour. TSA, which partnered with the city to test the units, is also working with New York and New Jersey in the wake of last year’s attempted suicide bombing at the Port Authority's Times Square subway station. The project will begin later this year.

The revelation shows how costly the project is for Uber — over the past three years, the company has spent at least $2 billion on it.

Spending at restaurants has soared at a record pace over the past three months. Sales rose 1.3% in July to $61.6 billion, leading to a three-month annualized gain of 25.3%. One explanation is that Americans are spending cash from tax cuts on dining out, while another is the increase in menu prices as restaurants counter a rise in minimum wages and rent costs.

Idea of the Day: Feeling pressed for time can hinder creative thinking, but if we better understand the psychology of time, we can start to make it work in our favour, says Ogilvy chief strategy officer Kevin Chesters.

“We can’t create time. Or bend time. And until they invent one of those Hermione Granger time-turners we can’t make it run backwards either. But we can change our relationship with it.”
